There are some sessions that feel less like work and more like being invited into something meaningful.

This was one of those. When Gailan and Bret's family arrived at Montlaurel, Amanda's private home in Madison, Virginia just outside of Charlottesville, the intention wasn’t just to take photos. It was to spend time together. To slow down for an evening as a family. To actually experience each other in a way that so often gets lost in everyday life.

A Spring Backdrop in Madison County

Spring at Montlaurel gave us everything we could have asked for.

The property was fully lush and green, the woods wrapping everything in texture, and the rhododendrons just beginning to bloom. It felt soft, alive, and effortless.

The family brought such a natural energy to it too. Parents with their two sons and their wives, a dynamic that already had history, humor, and ease built into it.

Nothing needed to be forced.

More Than a Family Session

What made this feel different wasn’t just the setting.

It was the intention behind it.

This wasn’t about checking “family photos” off a list. It was about creating an experience that they could actually enjoy while it was happening. And because there was no rush, no outside pressure, everything had space to breathe. That’s when people feel like themselves. That’s when the images start to feel like something you can come back to, not just look at once and move on.

Transitioning Into the Evening

As the light started to shift, the energy of the evening shifted with it.

We moved inside to the Whiskey Lounge for dinner, and everything slowed down in a different way.

If the earlier part of the evening felt light and playful, this felt grounded. Intentional. Intimate.

Dinner in the Whiskey Lounge

The table was set in a way that felt elevated but still completely comfortable. Burgundy napkins, green votives, gold flatware and chargers, details that added warmth without taking over the space.

Dinner was served family-style - chicken, salad, potatoes, wine, beer. Simple, thoughtful, and meant to be shared.

Why This Works So Well

We’ve photographed in parks. We’ve photographed in homes. We’ve photographed in restaurants.

And while we love shooting on location, there’s always something slightly in the way. At a park, it’s the unpredictability. The people. The lack of privacy.

At a restaurant, it’s the structure. The time limits. The inability to move freely.

At Montlaurel, those things fall away.

Because it’s private, because there’s space, because the entire environment is designed to feel like you can settle in, people show up differently.

They relax faster. They stay present longer.

And that changes everything for us as photographers.

What We Want More Of

Experiences like this are exactly what we want to create more of through Lumière de Soi.

Not just sessions, but evenings.

Something that allows you to step out of your routine and into a space where you can actually connect with the people you care about, while we document it in a way that feels true to you.

For this kind of experience, eight people is the sweet spot. It keeps things intimate while still feeling like a gathering.

And every piece of it can be shaped around what you want the evening to feel like.

A Different Kind of Documentation

At the end of this, yes, there was a gallery of images we’re incredibly proud of, but more than that, there was an entire evening behind those images.

Because years from now, it won’t just be about how everything looked. It will be about how it felt to be there, together, in that moment. And that’s what we’re always trying to hold onto.

Planning Your Own Experience

If you’ve been thinking about updating family photos, but the idea of a traditional session doesn’t feel like you, this might be a better fit.

A family dinner experience at Montlaurel combines everything into one evening. Photography, a private estate setting in Madison, Virginia near Charlottesville, and an intimate, shared meal.

It’s relaxed.

It’s intentional.

And it’s designed to feel like time well spent.

If that sounds like your kind of evening, we would love to create it with you. Contact us to learn more.
