A Sweet love story
Some love stories begin with grand gestures. Others begin quietly, with melting ice cream, sandy shoes, and a conversation that lingers longer than expected. Angela and Andrew’s story started exactly that way, on a simple bench overlooking Yorktown Beach in Virginia. It felt only right that their wedding day would bring them back to the place where everything began.
As wedding photographers based in Charlottesville, VA, we are always honored when we are chosen to travel for a special day, especially an elopement. Angela and Andrew knew from the beginning that a big celebration was not what they wanted. Instead, they envisioned something intentional, intimate, and deeply personal. An elopement rooted in memory. A courthouse wedding followed by time at Yorktown Beach, retracing the steps of their very first date.
Their fall wedding day arrived quietly, with soft light and cooler air hinting at the season ahead. There was no rush, no nerves filling a crowded room. Just the two of them, excited and grounded, ready to begin this next chapter together. We met them at the York County Courthouse, where their ceremony would take place.
Courthouse weddings have a way of stripping things back to what matters most. No elaborate decor or strict timelines, just two people standing together and choosing one another. On the courthouse steps, Angela and Andrew exchanged vows in a ceremony that was heartfelt and sincere. They held hands tightly, smiling and laughing through the emotion of it all.
Once the ceremony concluded and the paperwork was signed, they were officially married, grinning from ear to ear.
Recreating their first date
Before heading to the beach, there was one very important stop to make. A stop that felt just as meaningful as any portrait location.
Right after the ceremony, Angela and Andrew walked over to Ben & Jerry’s, the same ice cream shop they visited on their first date. Watching them order ice cream as newlyweds was one of those moments that perfectly captured who they are together. Casual, joyful, and completely themselves. They shared bites, laughed between spoonfuls, and soaked in the simple happiness of being married.
This stop was not just a fun addition to the day. It was a direct callback to where everything began. Their first date started with ice cream, conversation, and a bench by the water. Including Ben & Jerry’s in their elopement day made the story feel complete, as if past and present were gently overlapping.
From there, we made our way down to Yorktown Beach. The shift from courthouse wedding to beach wedding felt symbolic. From structured walls to open sky. From official vows to quiet moments together. The York River stretched out in front of us, calm and reflective, as if mirroring the mood of the day.
We began portraits under the York River Bridge, one of our favorite spots to photograph in the area. The lines of the bridge create a striking contrast against the natural landscape, and the soft shade made the fall light even more beautiful. Angela’s dress moved gently in the breeze, and Andrew could not stop looking at her with that unmistakable newlywed glow.
One of the things we love most about elopements is the freedom they offer. Without a packed timeline or guests waiting on the next event, couples can truly be present. Angela slipped off her shoes and walked barefoot in the sand. Andrew reached for her hand as they wandered along the shoreline, stopping often just to talk, laugh, and take everything in.
As we walked, they shared memories from their first date at Yorktown Beach. Sitting on a bench with ice cream in hand. Asking questions and getting to know each other. Neither of them knowing, at the time, just how significant that afternoon would become. Photographing these moments felt less like posing and more like documenting a story unfolding again.
The fall wedding light was soft and flattering, wrapping around them as the afternoon went on. The beach was peaceful, with only a few people scattered in the distance. It felt intimate, as though the space belonged to them alone. This is one of the reasons Yorktown Beach is such a wonderful location for an elopement or intimate wedding. It offers beauty without distraction and space to simply be.
Back to where it all began
Eventually, we made our way back to the bench where Angela and Andrew had sat on their first date. This moment brought everything full circle. Sitting side by side again, married now, the weight of the memory was unmistakable. What once marked the beginning of their relationship now symbolized how far they had come.
They sat close, shoulders touching, smiling softly at one another. There was no need for direction. The comfort between them spoke for itself. We stepped back and allowed the moment to unfold naturally, documenting the quiet connection that has clearly been there from the very beginning.
Angela and Andrew’s elopement was a perfect example of how meaningful a courthouse wedding and beach wedding can be. There was no excess, no pressure to perform. Just intention, history, and love. Every part of the day reflected who they are and what matters to them most.
As wedding photographers, our goal is always to tell the full story. Not just how a day looked, but how it felt. Angela and Andrew’s fall wedding reminded us why we love photographing elopements. They allow space for memories, for spontaneity, and for moments like stopping for ice cream as newlyweds because it feels right.
Yorktown Beach will always hold special meaning for this couple, and now it holds memories of their wedding day as well. From the courthouse ceremony to Ben & Jerry’s, from the bridge to the sand, and finally back to that meaningful bench, every piece of the day was connected.
Angela and Andrew, thank you for trusting us to document such a personal and heartfelt elopement. Your story is a reminder that weddings do not need to be big to be deeply meaningful. Sometimes, all it takes is the right person, the right place, and a scoop of ice cream to start forever.
