There’s something about early evening light in Central Virginia that makes everything feel softer, warmer, and just a little more magical. When we met Audrey and Jack for their engagement session at Yowell Meadow Park in Culpeper, that golden glow was waiting for us—shimmering through the trees, glinting off the creek, and setting the perfect stage for two people who couldn’t stop smiling at each other.

We had been looking forward to this Culpeper engagement session ever since Audrey and Jack reached out to plan their wedding photography. They’re getting married this November at Avonlea Farm in Mineral, a stunning venue surrounded by rolling fields and mountain views. For their engagement photos, they wanted something simple, romantic, and full of nature—somewhere that reflected their down-to-earth personalities and the quiet joy they share. Yowell Meadow Park in downtown Culpeper ended up being the perfect spot.

The Charm of Yowell Meadow Park

Culpeper has this lovely balance of small-town charm and beautiful outdoor spaces, and Yowell Meadow Park captures that mix perfectly. The park stretches through the heart of town with winding walking trails, old bridges, and wide open meadows that catch the light just right as the sun sets. It’s one of our favorite spots for an engagement session in Central Virginia, especially for couples who want nature without having to hike deep into the mountains.

When we arrived, the air had that soft, late summer feel—warm but with the hint of cooler evenings ahead. We knew right away we were in for a relaxed and beautiful shoot.

Getting to Know Audrey & Jack

One of our favorite things about engagement sessions is that they give us a chance to really connect with our couples before the wedding day. From the moment we met Audrey and Jack, it was clear how comfortable they are together. They have that kind of effortless connection that makes our job easy—genuine laughter, quick glances, and a sense of fun that comes through in every frame.

They live near Washington, D.C., where life tends to move quickly. They told us they loved the idea of escaping to Central Virginia for a weekend to slow down, breathe a little, and celebrate this sweet season before their wedding. As we walked the trails at Yowell Meadow Park, they told us stories about how they met, how they got engaged, and how excited they are for their fall wedding at Avonlea Farm.

It’s always special to hear those stories while we photograph. We love how the conversation naturally mixes with the photos—laughing about something funny one moment, then quietly leaning in for a kiss the next. That balance of fun and tenderness is exactly what makes an engagement session so memorable.

Their Effortless Style

We have to talk about their outfits, because they looked absolutely perfect together. Jack wore a classic blue suit that was just formal enough to stand out against the park’s greenery without feeling overdressed. Audrey’s dress was a dream—soft, flowy fabric with delicate cap sleeves that moved beautifully every time she walked or twirled. The color palette of their outfits—light blues, soft neutrals, and a touch of ivory—fit perfectly with the natural tones of Yowell Meadow.

We always tell couples that the best engagement session looks come from outfits that feel like you but slightly elevated. Audrey and Jack struck that balance effortlessly. Their style complemented both the landscape and each other, and the photos feel timeless because of it.

Easy Laughter and Natural Moments

As photographers, our favorite images are often the ones that happen in between poses—the laughter that bubbles up after a whisper, the quick glance over the shoulder, the way someone reaches for their partner’s hand without even thinking about it. Audrey and Jack had so many of those moments.

At one point, we were walking toward a little bridge that crosses the stream, and Jack made a joke that had Audrey laughing so hard she had to stop walking. The light was streaming through the trees behind them, and the photo that came from that moment turned out to be one of our favorites of the day. You can’t plan that kind of happiness—it just happens naturally when two people are completely at ease together.

We moved through a few different parts of the park—starting in the open meadow, then winding down to the creek and the trails surrounded by trees. Each spot offered a slightly different mood, but through it all, Audrey and Jack stayed connected, laughing and talking like we weren’t even there. That’s always our goal with engagement sessions: to make it feel like a date, not a photo shoot.

Why We Love Engagement Sessions

We always encourage couples to schedule an engagement session before the wedding day. Not only does it give you a set of beautiful, personal images, but it also helps you feel more comfortable in front of the camera. By the time your wedding arrives, you already know how we work, and posing feels completely natural.

With Audrey and Jack, this session gave us a glimpse into how they interact and what kind of energy they’ll bring to their wedding at Avonlea Farm. They’re warm, thoughtful, and clearly have a lot of fun together—which tells us their wedding day will be full of laughter and love.

Plus, having a Culpeper engagement session like this one adds variety to your photo story. You get the romantic, natural backdrops of Central Virginia to contrast beautifully with the more refined details of your wedding day.

A Preview of What’s to Come

As the sun began to dip lower, we wrapped up the session on one of the park’s trails lined with tall grass glowing in the light. It was such a peaceful ending to a fun afternoon. We left feeling even more excited for their November wedding at Avonlea Farm.

Avonlea is such a special venue—wide-open spaces, rustic charm, and those sweeping Central Virginia views that make every photo feel cinematic. Knowing how effortlessly Audrey and Jack connect, we can already picture their ceremony surrounded by fall color and their family and friends. It’s going to be an incredible day, and we feel so lucky to be the ones capturing it.
